Perfection

June 2, 2010

Baseball fans witnessed something tonight in Detroit they should never forget. Sadly, the most obvious things are often the most easily overlooked.

It was not veteran umpire Jim Joyce’s blown call for the final out in a near-perfect game that everybody should remember, but the way Detroit pitcher Armando Galarraga and Joyce handled themselves afterwards. Galarraga smiled and shrugged it off. Joyce admitted his mistake and apologized both personally and publicly.

It would be a mistake to see this as a case for instant replay and review of close calls in baseball. What we saw tonight was even better and perhaps even rarer than a perfect game in this age of inflated salaries and even bigger egos: Perfect humility and sportsmanship of the highest order. Who wants instant replay when we get to see human beings at their best instead?
